This project for the University of Illinois consisted of a building addition to the existing Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) facility. The building addition project involved multiple utility service re-routes and coordination with phased construction projects of the existing laboratory facility.

TERRA provided civil engineering, site planning, landscape architecture, construction engineering and surveying services for the new addition. Design challenges included establishing a location and elevation for the proposed building so that vital water service, electrical utilities, and adjacent building foundations would not be affected. The TERRA team coordinated with the City of Champaign, UIUC, and Army Corps of Engineers throughout the duration of this project.

A phased landscape plan was developed, providing the client with a basis for initial construction, along with construction documents for future site opportunities. Foundation plantings consist of native, low maintenance, plant material designed to complement the architecture. Site furnishings include bicycle racks, permeable pavers, and decorative flag poles. The final design includes a decorative outdoor courtyard space focused on the users, incorporating enhanced foundation landscaping, outdoor seating opportunities, high end site furnishings, and a custom water feature.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2016.
