PEORIA, Ill. – Masdar City of United Arab Emirates, the first Carbon-neutral city in the world, was an intriguing discussion at the Innovations in Construction, Asphalt and Transportation (ICAT) 2016 Conference this spring.

TERRA executives, Jamil Bou-Saab, PE and George Ghareeb, PE, gave a presentation on the city’s remarkable features, which includes 87,777 solar panels, a 45-meter Teflon-coated wind tower, driverless transit systems, as well as a strategic street design that optimizes shade and assists in the flow of cool wind ventilation. The city was established in 2006 by Masdar, also known as the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, which is a subsidiary of the Mubadala Development Company. Masdar City is the headquarters to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. The city itself is one square mile in geography, located in the UAE desert and is home 45,000 residents.

The ICAT Conference is hosted annually by Bradley University, seeking to fulfill its mission “to develop a network of business executives, policymakers and scholars from around the USA. The objective is to promote business partnerships, align and leverage new alliances, explore creative funding sources, and address challenges facing the infrastructure industry,” said ICAT Conference Founder and Chair Dr. Amir Al-Khafaji.
