Completed in September 2010, the Benito Juarez Community Academy Addition includes a new performing arts building, classroom bridge, soccer field, softball field, and plaza. Located in Chicago’s West Side Pilsen neighborhood, the project provides an example of a public building re-energizing an otherwise “cold area” through the implementation of sustainable practices to encourage economic and social development as well as minimize its impact on the surrounding environment. Through innovative construction phasing techniques and collaboration with public agencies (specifically the Chicago Department of Transportation), TERRA set a new sustainable precedent for multi-phase projects in Chicago and demonstrated that the integration of public and private developments can result in a more sustainable solution for property owners. In September 2012, the project was awarded the American Society of Illinois Section Sustainability Achievement Award.
