PEORIA, Ill. – On Tuesday, September 30, TERRA Engineering, Ltd. will accept the Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award at the American Society of Civil Engineers – Central Illinois Section’s 2014 Annual Meeting and Banquet in Champaign, Illinois for the design of the City of Peoria’s Main and University Intersection Improvements project. TERRA collaborated with the City of Peoria on the aggressive design-build project. The complete intersection reconstruction included replacement of water main, landscaping and aesthetic enhancements, pedestrian upgrades and new signals.

George Ghareeb, TERRA’s vice president, said, “Challenged by the fast-track schedule to complete and open the intersection prior to Bradley’s May Commencement, the project’s success is attributed to the constant communication efforts between the team members including the City, the contractor, the designer along with the extensive public outreach efforts with the neighborhood associations and Bradley University.”

The Main and University intersection reconstruction work included a “road diet” reducing the intersection from five to six lanes to three lanes – a single lane in each direction with left turn lanes. Additionally, curb bump outs with sustainable landscaping and seating walls were installed. The intersection features a raised “tabletop” which places the focus on pedestrians and the signals include an all-pedestrian phase which allows diagonal crossing. The project was expanded to include several midblock crosswalks serving Bradley University and additional neighborhood traffic calming to prevent neighborhood cut-through traffic from the reduced intersection capacity.

ASCE-Central Illinois’ Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award shines a spotlight on projects that best illustrate superior civil engineering skills and represents a significant contribution to civil engineering progress and to society as a whole. Winners are evaluated on the contribution to the well-being of people and communities, resourcefulness in planning and solving design challenges, pioneering in use of materials and methods, innovations in construction, impact on the physical environment, beneficial effects and aesthetic value.
