Terra Engineering was responsible for the civil engineering for Mary Bartelme Park, located in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. The design required extensive remediation and environmental considerations as it is located on a contaminated site of a former infirmary. Clean soil was imported to the site to create a buffer between the contaminated soil and the surface and Terra completed detailed earthwork computations using 3-dimensional Civil 3-d software to estimate the amount of soil needed for remediation. Terra employed a cost efficient sub-surface stormwater detention design, directing the stormwater through the decorative permeable pavers on site to a stone aggregate infiltration field beneath the park’s largest mound. Completed in August 2010, the park provides a sustainable green space in the midst of a crowded, industrial district.
