Located at the corner of 115th and Western in Chicago’s southwest side Morgan Park neighborhood, the new Chicago Park District Sports Center will bring a much needed gymnasium and ice arena to the area. The project boasts a training gymnasium to host USGA men’s and women’s events, in-ground landing pit and trampolines, and programming capabilities for pre-school to club level. The ice arena houses an 85’ x 200’ skating rink (NHL Standard); 800-1,000 bleacher seat capacity; and will host competitive hockey, figure skating and recreational skating events. Site work consists of a new entrance driveway and drop off area, exterior plaza at the main entrance, a new +/-80-stall parking lot, a vehicular drive for back-of-house deliveries and maintenance, and landscape frontage. To facilitate site development, a portion of 115th Street will be vacated and closed to vehicular traffic.

TERRA’s traffic engineering staff provided a full traffic impact study regarding the 115th Street vacation, including attendance to a public meeting to both outline the results of the report and field questions from the community. TERRA’s landscape architecture staff provided site planning and site renderings to accompany their landscape architecture design. The design focuses heavily on low-maintenance and cost-effective means to meet Chicago code requirements but also provide a beautiful entrance plaza with seating and plantings. TERRA’s site development staff worked with the team to guide the project through the city’s street vacation process, engineered an environmentally-friendly stormwater management plan which promotes infiltration, and authored earthwork plans and specifications to appropriately manage site soils.
