CHICAGO – On Saturday, October 11, TERRA Engineering, Ltd.’s staff joined officials from the Chicago Cubs, Major League Baseball and the City of Chicago to celebrate the groundbreaking of renovations to the 100-year-old Wrigley Field. Attendees included Alderman Tom Tunney, Alderman Patrick O’Connor, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, Cubs Board Member and Cubs Charities Chair Laura Ricketts, President of Business Operations Crane Kenney, President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein and former Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood.
As the civil engineer of record, TERRA is involved in all phases of Wrigley Field’s renovation, formally known as the 1060 Project. The 1060 Project will ensure the viability of Wrigley Field for future generations of Cubs fans, while preserving the beauty, charm and historic features fans have come to know and love. Improvements include expansion to the iconic ballpark, including drainage analysis and engineering to mitigate historical water management issues. In addition to work at the ballpark, TERRA is designing the grading, drainage, and underground utilities for a new plaza and office building on the west side of the ballpark. TERRA is utilizing the latest in BIM technology for civil engineering practice to assist in analyzing sewer hydraulics and conflicts with existing and proposed utilities. TERRA also completed a boundary, topographic and utility survey of the ballpark and surrounding associated properties.
Jamil Bou-Saab, TERRA’s executive vice president, said, “Wrigley Field’s renovation will require the use of state-of-the-art engineering technology to preserve and enhance the historic ballpark as it progresses into its second century of baseball.”
The four-year, privately-funded $575 million project – which includes structural updates; improved player facilities; new signage, including video boards in left and right field; expanded concessions; new and improved restroom facilities and much more – will be rolled out in four separate phases, beginning in the 2014 offseason.
